We want to work with like minded people intent on providing
a service to sufferers and to promote programmes to reduce
the incidence of exposure to asbestos fibres through asbestos
awareness, education and use of safety products.
From our experience we have learned two things:
- Information about asbestos is not always
accessible or necassarily correct and it needs to be readily
available, in an easy to use format with assistance for
all, and
- We must do all we can to prevent exposure
thereby reducing the incidence of asbestos related disease
now and in the future
In this context, I would like to outline the
plan we are putting in place.
Planning commenced 5 years ago resulting from inquiries from
home owners
seeking a broad based asbestos awareness solution that:
- met their short and long term needs
- answerd all the key safety questions
- allowed householders to manage or own
the outcome
- provided a way to let home owners and
trades people work together
- Increasing concern over health affects of
exposure to asbestos fibres
- Poor quality or misleading information creates
paranoia in the community
- 2 out of 3 houses built prior to 1987may
contain asbestos
- Trades people appreciate they are at a higher
risk without adequate training
- Householders are willing to learn and take
ownership to manage asbestos.
- Technology is available to facilitate 100%
awareness - economically.
- To reduce the incidence of asbestos
related diseases by reducing the exposure to asbestos through
better awareness.
- To make all Australian people, both
business and home owners actively aware of asbestos safety
and what they can do.
- Achieve our 100% asbestos awareness
goal in 5 years.
- To promote government, industry, unions
and community involvement
in our objectives.
Asbestos Info has engaged Asbestos & You
Pty Ltd as the vehicle to manage the National Awareness Campaign,
to source available asbestos safety products and services,
based on the depth of their experience in identifying and
developing products to service industry and community needs.
- Awareness of dangers of asbestos.
- Capacity to identify potential asbestos containing
products and their condition
- Linking awareness and the risk associated
with individual asbestos containing products.
- Instructions, guidelines and examples to
allow people to work safely with asbestos containing products
in the home whether do-it-yourself or using
a trades person.
Our participating partners program allows the
government, industry, unions and community to become actively
involved.
Asbestos Info will be working with State based
disease support services, sponsors, participating partners
and the community to fulfill their objectives and interests.
