The risk is where the asbestos containing product is.

Asbestos fibres are a danger to you and your family when asbestos containing products are in a weathered or unstable condition. A maintenance programme needs to be in place.

The other danger situation is when asbestos containing products are worked on in an unsafe manner and have the potential to release asbestos fibres - possibly contaminating people in their home or workplace.

The high risk target groups therefore are "Do-It-Yourself" home owners, trades people, contractors and builders and can include:

  • home owners who do-it-themselves
  • home handy men
  • plumbers and gasfitters
  • irrigation and storm water contractors
  • electricians
  • roofing and guttering specialists
  • plasterers
  • painters and decorators
  • motor mechanics
  • building dismantlers & demolition contractors
  • air conditioning mechanics
  • white ant controllers and technicians
  • security and service technicians

As you are aware, 2 out of 3 houses built before 1987 could contain asbestos.
Untrained trades people can unknowingly work on these products incorrectly and contaminate your home, affecting the health and welfare of your family.

The risks can be minimised with training - which you and the tradesperson should do.
